How can I pay for assisted living or memory care?

Paying for assisted living or memory care is one of the most common challenges caregiving families face. Options include: Medicaid, which covers long-term care costs for individuals who qualify after spending down assets to state-set limits; long-term care insurance, if your loved one purchased a policy before diagnosis; veterans benefits, including the Aid and Attendance benefit for eligible veterans and surviving spouses; a reverse mortgage on the family home for homeowners 62 and older; life insurance policy conversions or accelerated death benefits; and bridge loans designed specifically for senior care transitions. The right mix depends on your loved one's assets, income, and state of residence.

What non-medical decisions do caregivers have to make?

How do I find a specialist for a loved one with a serious illness?

Finding the right specialist depends on the illness. For movement disorders like Parkinson's, look for a movement disorder specialist (a neurologist with additional fellowship training in Parkinson's) rather than a general neurologist — care at a dedicated movement disorder clinic is associated with better outcomes. For ALS, multidisciplinary ALS clinics — which combine neurology, pulmonology, physical therapy, nutrition, and social work in one visit — are strongly recommended by ALS organizations. For dementia, a geriatric psychiatrist, behavioral neurologist, or geriatrician with dementia experience is preferred. Danny was my father, who lived with Parkinson's disease for over 18 years. Throughout this journey, my mother served as his primary caregiver, facing hundreds of crucial decisions about his care, finances, estate planning, and long-term care arrangements.

This deeply personal experience - watching my mother navigate the complexities of caregiving for my father - revealed a significant challenge in the caregiving landscape: the lack of consistent, reliable information and guidance across the many phases of the caregiving journey. From early diagnosis to late-stage care, we encountered fragmented resources, disparate sources of information, and no unified platform to help make well-informed decisions about care, financial planning, and emotional support.

An accomplished digital marketer and business development professional, Richard is focused on building and expanding the future of Danny and the impacts it can have on the future of caregiver support. Prior to founding Danny, Richard was VP of Strategic Partnerships for the Financial Services brands at Red Ventures where he drove commercial growth of Bankrate and a variety of other brands. After experiencing the real life struggles of his father (Danny) battle Parkinson's disease and watching his mother be a dedicated caregiver for 18 years, Richard was inspired to make the caregiver process of learning, engaging and eventually making the multitude of non-medical decisions on behalf of a loved one more connected and attainable.
